Although the city of Bartin acquired its eponymous University 14 years ago, the history of the city University dates back to the nineties, Bartin College of Forestry, founded within the University of Zongoldak in 1992, was the first college founded in Bartın, Barton College of Forestry, founded on the Ağdacı campus, began its educational life by receiving its first high school students in the academic year 1993-1994.
Bartın University was actually founded in 2008, with the establishment of city Universities by order of the Ministry of Higher Education throughout the country, the city of Bartın acquired its own University, Bartın University received in 2008, its first students in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering, the Institute of Social Sciences, and continues to develop it in order to meet the needs of students in Turkey.
Since the Ağdacı campus is small in area, the University established a new campus, in August 2009, an area of 1,171,032.22 m2 was defined, located within the boundaries of the villages of Kutlubey-Yazıcılar and Esenyurt on the highway.
Bartın University, which has developed scientifically in short time has continued increase the number of faculties, the College of Education and Arts in 2010, the College of Science in 2011, the Institute of Educational Sciences and the College of Islamic Sciences in 2012, the Ulus Vocational School in 2017, the College of Foreign Languages and the College of Health Sciences in 2018, and the College of Sports Sciences was established in 2019. By Presidential Decree 2019, The Faculty of Engineering, which is affiliated with the Directorate of Bartın University, has been renamed the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design. In addition, by the decision of the President of the Republic of June 15, the institutes were grouped under one roof and named the Institute of Higher Education.
Today, Bartın University, which has 9 faculties, 3 vocational schools and one institute, has more than 20,000 students. Bartın University, which is an important University thanks to the importance it attaches to quality education and scientific infrastructure, has found it to have a respected position despite its 12-year history.
